Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead facing bin strike

GMB union members will walk out for two weeks from 29 September to leave the King and his neighbours’ bins unemptied
GMB members working as refuse collectors in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead (RBWM) will strike for two weeks from 29 September.
The union members, who work for the council’s waste contractor Serco, will be taking action until their employer offers an improved pay offer.
Instead of improving the offer of 3.5 per cent, management have instead threatened to withdraw this offer and impose a 1.5 per cent increase if the union members do not withdraw their strike notice.
More than two-thirds of the workforce are expected to take action, which the union is warning will lead to widespread disruption across the Windsor and Maidenhead area.
David McMullen, GMB Regional Officer, said:
“We’ve been here before, when our members voted to take action, only for the employer to pay up after one day of action.
“We’re calling on the company to see sense and make the offer now, rather than put residents – including the King – through all this unnecessary inconvenience.
“This is one of the most expensive areas in the country to live and the pay offer on the table does not come close to addressing that.
“Serco are trying to play hardball by threatening to withdraw the offer if their employees don’t fall in line.
“This is not a way to treat your own staff, not a way to conduct industrial relations, and our members will not be bullied into accepting a lower deal.”
