GMB Southern Region members recovered more than £8.9 million in legal claims in 2021.

Justin Bowden, GMB Regional Secretary, commented saying, “This is a fantastic result and I am pleased that GMB were able to assist our members to recover the compensation they deserve.”

The cases were varied including one case where the member recovered £25,000 when he developed vibration white finger from using tools.

Another member recovered £4,500 when they were injured after being attacked by a student.

Another member also recovered £4,500 when they were injured in a road traffic accident.

Another member recovered more than £5,000 when he lost his job as a result of his employer’s insolvency.

He further stated, “We have also had success in securing better pay and working conditions for members outside the legal process. Already in 2022 we have had a massive victory for GMB members who work for South East Environmental Services. The members, who are refuse collectors, took a stand against poor terms and conditions of employment and secured a 19% rise in pay.”

Gary Palmer, GMB Regional Organiser, who assisted the GMB members in securing the pay rise, commented saying,

“This is about low paid employees recognising their true value in the workplace. Employers should give workers decent terms and conditions. After successes in Brighton and Eastbourne, we are now balloting workers in Adur and Worthing Council as well as in Hastings. We have also had enquiries from workers in Littlehampton, Chichester, Arun, Hailsham and all around the country - there has been a huge knock-on effect to our victory. There is power in the Union. Working people need to join GMB and we will support you in your fight for better terms and conditions of employment.”
