Pay blunder at St Helier Hospital plunges hospital staff into poverty at Christmas. Low paid hospital workers suffer to afford Christmas as it is but this pay mistake will plunge people into severe financial hardship over the Christmas period, says GMB Southern.

Private company Mitie who hold the cleaning, portering and catering contract for Epsom and St Helier NHS Trust have made a payroll error costing hospital staff hundreds of pounds over the Christmas time.

There is growing anger amongst GMB members over their treatment at the hands of private company Mitie and losing pay at Christmas is the final straw.

Helen O’Connor, GMB Regional Organiser said:

"Low paid hospital workers suffer to afford Christmas as it is but this pay mistake will plunge people into severe financial hardship over the Christmas period.

"These highly paid but incompetent Mitie managers are now uncontactable over the Christmas period while the St Helier Hospital workforce and their families suffer. This is just the latest in a line of blunders from Mitie.

"We are told that these private companies bring expertise and experience into the NHS yet all we see is a catalogue of mistakes and mistreatment of hospital worker. Paying staff is the simplest thing an employer can do and Mitie are clearly showing that they cannot even get this right.

"Our members will go into 2019 determined to fight against these profiteers who strip huge profits out of the NHS."
